ABNOX is a brand of international renown that stands for flawless quality, short delivery times and proximity to the customer. We are taking a look behind the scenes of the Swiss family business with a story about scope for development. The values practised internally at ABNOX are noteworthy: Mutual esteem, individual structuring options and integration are a matter of course.
Colin Felber, in the fourth year of his design engineering apprenticeship, had the opportunity to dedicate himself to a special project during the last four months: The development of a control unit for pneumatic metering valves to be deployed quickly at any location and operated without a computer.
In order to meet these requirements, the trainee built a simple solution comprised of pneumatic components that is capable of more than a conventional control unit of this type. Aside from the adjustable parameters of pressure, volume and time, an automatic mode supporting multiple dosing cycles also had to be integrated.
Plug and play in the ABNOX laboratory
Colin Felber reports: “This project allowed me to actively experience what the individual process steps require – from the design, preparation of the circuit diagram and production drawings to the pneumatic simulation to assembly.” The 18-year-old took note of important aspects in the process that would otherwise not have been as memorable, for example, including space for assembly processes in the calculations. He had this to say about learning by doing: “After a supervised phase at the outside, I did all the work single-handedly, acquiring technical knowledge that helped me in my vocational school courses.”
In particular, trainees value that such projects have a purpose. Colin Felber did not build the control unit for the birds, but for use in the ABNOX laboratory. It is now used to determine the dosing parameters for customer components easily and quickly via plug and play – just connect the valves, energise and start testing the dosing or lubrication process! “It’s cool that ABNOX supports trainees in realising such projects,” Colin Felber says in conclusion. He is very pleased that more specimens are going to be built, in addition to working with the existing one.
