Grease supply
Lubricants
The pumpability of the lubricant is influenced by many different factors.
- The penetration (consistency) is one of the most important indicators. The higher the penetration NLGI class, the stiffer the lubricant becomes. Generally speaking: stiffer lubricant (grease) is less easy to pump. NLGI class 000 is the lowest class, i.e., the softest lubricant. NLGI class 6 is the stiffest, most viscous lubricant.
- Lubricants up to NLGI class 2 can normally be pumped without problems.
- The majority of lubricants used correspond to NLGI class 2.
- NLGI class = lubricant classification established by the National Lubricating Grease Institute.
- The apparent dynamic viscosity specified by some lubricant manufacturers is of importance. If it exceeds 5000 mPa.s, pumping with conventional grease guns or lubrication systems becomes difficult or even impossible.
- The ambient temperature and the length of the pipes or hoses are equally significant.
- Synthetic or bio-lubricants can attack the sealing materials.
- If the solid content in the lubricant (grease) is too high, pumping the lubricant with conventional pumps can become impossible.
- Silicone greases require special attention. Do not confuse silicone greases with silicone as a sealant (not a lubricant).
